Arteriovenous malformations (AVMs) are characterised by an abnormal collection of blood vessels due to an connection directly between the arteries and veins. They can occur anywhere in the body but have a tendency to affect the head and neck. Most patients are born with this condition.
At Birmingham Vascular clinic, with our specialist collaborators we are able to help manage this conditions especially affecting the arms and legs. Common symptoms in this part of the body include pain, swelling, inflammation and ulceration.
There are numerous options for treating this and this will be tailored towards your symptoms and will depend on the results of any investigation. In the majority of cases, there may be no need for any treatment but others may require sclerotherapy, embolisation (minimally invasive treatment) or surgery. Surgery is reserved for only a small number of cases as the results of this is variable.
